It's not like diving for the ball you know, Jamie! Redknapp gets a lesson poolside from gold medallist Tom Daley

Aiming high: Jamie Redknapp braces himself for a plunge into the pool

He may be less than half their age but Tom Daley played the role of teacher when he passed on some of his expert diving knowledge to footballer Jamie Redknapp and comedian John Bishop.

The champion diver, 17, assisted the duo as they prepared to take part in a television challenge show.

Tom put ex-footballer Redknapp and stand-up comedian Bishop through their paces as they tried to get themselves ready to perform a 10metre dive in his town pool in Plymouth.

Working his way up: Jamie tried one of the less intimidating dives first

The jump can send the duo splashing down into the water at speeds of up to 40mph.

But, with Tom's coaching expertise both Jamie and John build up enough confidence to take the challenge head on.

Tom, who won two gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, also acts as judge on the show - awarding the duo points for their efforts in performing the dive he has trained them for.

Falling at speed: Divers can hit the water at up to 40 miles per hour

When first confronted with the 10metre-high diving board, comedian John Bishop's first reaction is: 'That’s a long, long way! Can we go now?'

While former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp explains: 'You get up there and you look down and you just think, "I can’t do this".'

The Sky 1's A League Of Their Own show is hosted by comedian, James Corden plus guests Peter Crouch and Phil Jupitus.

After watching the competitors dive, Corden comments that it looks like a terrifying challenge, to which Bishop quips: 'It was terrifying on a number of levels. One it’s very high, two I’ve got to take my robe off next to Tom Daley and Jamie Redknapp.

Long way to fall: The diving board is 10 metres high

Splash down! The former footballer hits the water following his dive

'And I went and got a spray tan, obviously not a very good one (see images), I should have kept my bermudas on! Just before we went up the coach said to me and Jamie, just concentrate on your technique Jamie, lean forward, concentrate, and then he just looked at me and said “you’re going to hurt yourself...'

Bishop continues his amusing commentary, after Corden mentions his famous mentor, Tom Daley.

Corden comments on what a nice guy Daley is, to which Bishop says: 'Yes but what was most annoying was he did all these somersaults , then he went off, did double maths and then did more dives!'

Scared yet? John Bishop's first reaction when he saw how high the dive was 'can we go now?'

But, as proved by Tom Daley's final summary, both men did really well to pick up the techniques needed to perform their task and complete it with relative ease... though John was slightly under par.

He said: 'Both of the divers did really well. John had good form, was tight in the air. Jamie was good through the air, a little bit over but wasn’t quite as over as John so I’m gonna give John 6.5 and Jamie an 8.0. Jamie wins the challenge.'
